Who voted for Chávez? An interactive diagram

For the documentary Venezuela in Context, we wanted to know if it’s true what the Venezuelan government claims: that it represents the poor and working classes, and the opposition the rich. For this we created an interactive diagram to visualise voting and poverty data of all parishes in Venezuela. Here you can see both: our answer in a video and use the interactive diagram yourself.

This chart plots all of Venezuelas parishes support for chavismo (for the recall referendum 2004 and the presidential elections 1998, 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2013) and weighed average of poverty rates from the 2001 and 2011 censuses. Caution interpreting our poverty rates, this is to check the voting pattern! Check the how-to guide to get a table matching parish IDs used by ESDATA and INE (UBIGEO)! You can also directly access the Google Spreadsheet here. Make sure you also check out Dorothy Kronick, Chris Font and Javier Rodríguez election maps! The two together are just wonderful!

Somewhere between a social scientist and a journalist, I currently work as a news editor for major Swiss newspapers and manage the program «Peace & Security» at the think tank foraus – Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy. In 2015 I founded the website elcontexto.org, where in 2016 friends and I published the first «open-source» documentary about Venezuela and short documentaries about Catalan separatism and ISIS. Originally, I'm an IT engineer, but I later studied International Relations (MA) at the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) and Development and Peace Studies (BA) at University Of Bradford.

I haven't found a simple visual chronology of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., so I made one. I hope it helps.… https://t.co/KtP4GzQfkr - 2 days ago
